After-School Basketball Programs in Queens: Why Hoops Troop Stands Out
Parents in Queens have no shortage of after-school options: tutoring, music lessons, martial arts, dance. But if your child loves to move, compete, and be part of a team, basketball might be the perfect fit.
Why Choose Basketball Over Other Activities?
It's Accessible
Basketball requires minimal equipment—just sneakers and athletic clothes. No expensive gear, no travel to distant facilities. We practice in a school gym right in Queens Village.
It's Social
Unlike individual sports, basketball is inherently team-based. Kids make friends, learn to communicate, and develop social skills while they play.
It Builds Versatile Athletes
Basketball develops:
- Speed and agility
- Coordination and balance
- Endurance and stamina
- Quick decision-making
These skills transfer to any other sport your child might play.
It's Year-Round
While some sports are seasonal, basketball can be played indoors year-round. Our season runs September through June, giving kids consistent structure during the school year.
What Makes a Good After-School Basketball Program?
Convenient Timing
After-school programs should fit family schedules. At Hoops Troop:
- K-5 sessions: 4:00-5:00 PM (Team practice 5:00-5:30 PM, invite only)
- 6th+ sessions: 5:30-6:30 PM (Team practice 6:30-7:00 PM, invite only)
- Practice ends by 7:00 PM — home for dinner and homework
Follows the School Calendar
Nothing's more frustrating than showing up to a closed gym. We follow the NYC DOE calendar:
- No sessions on school holidays
- Season runs September through June
- Summer programs available separately
Safe Environment
PS 135 is a familiar, school setting. Parents can watch from the sidelines or use the time to run errands nearby.
Reasonable Commitment
We don't lock families into year-long contracts. Month-to-month membership means:
- Cancel anytime before your next billing date
- No pressure to continue if it's not working
- Flexibility for busy family schedules
