Basketball Fundamentals Every Young Player Should Master
Before players can run complex plays or hit step-back threes, they need to master the basics. Here are the core fundamentals we focus on at Hoops Troop—and why they matter.
1. Ball Handling
Ball handling is the foundation of everything in basketball. A player who can control the ball can create opportunities for themselves and their team.
What We Teach
- Dribbling with both hands: Most kids favor their dominant hand. We drill both equally.
- Eyes up: Beginners watch the ball. Good players see the court.
- Control under pressure: Practice dribbling with defenders helps game-day performance.
- Change of pace: Learning when to speed up and slow down.
Drills We Use
- Stationary dribbling series (pound, crossover, between the legs)
- Full-court dribbling with obstacles
- Keep-away games
- One-on-one challenges
2. Shooting Form
Shooting is about mechanics first, accuracy second. When the form is right, the shots start falling.
The BEEF Method
- Balance: Feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent
- Eyes: Focus on the rim (not the ball)
- Elbow: Under the ball, forms an "L"
- Follow-through: Snap the wrist, hold the finish
Common Mistakes We Fix
- Shooting from the hip instead of the shoulder
- Fading away on every shot
- Not using legs for power
- Inconsistent release point
We start close to the basket and work outward. No three-pointers until the form is solid from mid-range.
3. Defensive Stance
Offense wins games, but defense wins championships. Good defensive habits start early.
Key Principles
- Low stance: Bend at the knees, not the waist
- Active hands: Contest shots without fouling
- Slide, don't cross: Keep feet moving laterally
- Communication: Call out screens and switches
Why It Matters
Kids who learn defense early:
- Get more playing time on school teams
- Understand team concepts better
- Stay engaged when they don't have the ball
- Build conditioning naturally
4. Passing
The best teams move the ball. Good passers make everyone around them better.
Types of Passes We Teach
- Chest pass: Two hands, quick and direct
- Bounce pass: Gets under defenders' hands
- Overhead pass: Useful against shorter defenders
- One-hand push pass: Quick outlet passes
Reading the Defense
We teach kids to see:
- Open teammates
- Defensive positioning
- When to pass vs. when to hold
5. Footwork
Great players have great feet. Footwork affects every aspect of the game.
Offensive Footwork
- Triple threat position
- Jab step
- Pivot (front and reverse)
- Jump stop
Defensive Footwork
- Lateral slides
- Drop step
- Close-out technique
- Box out positioning
6. Game IQ
Understanding the game separates good athletes from good basketball players.
Concepts We Cover
- Spacing: Don't crowd teammates
- Cutting: Move with purpose off the ball
- Help defense: Rotate to stop drives
- Transition: Push in transition, get back on defense
These concepts come through repetition and game-like situations in practice.

Fundamentals aren't flashy, but they're essential. The kids who master these basics become the standout players on their school teams.
